This vitamin is bound to the protein in food. Acid in the stomach releases B12 from protein during digestion. Then vitamin B12 join intrinsic factor to be absorbed by the intestine into the bloodstream.
Here are some of the main functions of vitamin B12 for the body:

Maintaining the health of the nervous system.
    
Releasing energy from food consumed.
    
Processing of folic acid.
    
Assist in the process of DNA synthesis.
